A Treherne Collegiate graduate has been recognized for his athletic accomplishments in his senior year.

Alex Kubinec is the 2022 MHSAA Athlete of the Year from the 'A' Division. Kubinec participated in a wide array of sports this school year as he was the captain of the hockey team, co-captain of the volleyball and basketball teams, while also taking part in baseball, golf, and track.

The multi-sport athlete says he didn't know he had won the award until the night of the ceremony.

"I think my athletic director at my school had emailed my mom telling her about it but told her to keep it quiet because no one really knew about it yet," Kubinec explains. "At first, I thought I was just a finalist. I didn't realize I had actually won the award. When I got to the event, I saw that I was the only guy there from the 'A' Division and was pretty sure I won."

He notes it was an honour to be among so many great athletes.

"It was pretty cool because one of the guys from a bigger school is playing for Team Canada," says Kubinec. "To be up at the front of the room with the award and standing beside him was a good feeling."

Kubinec received a number of accolades throughout his senior year, including leading the Pembina Tigers hockey team to a bronze medal at the AA provincials. The defenceman was named to the Zone 4 High School Hockey League's All-Star Team and received a Player's Choice award at the provincial tournament. He was also named the MHSAA's Male Athlete of the Week for the week of February 9th, where he posted 10 points in two games.

With the Treherne Tigers volleyball team, Kubinec was named a tournament all-star at the 'A' provincials, where the team finished with a silver medal. He was also named a graduating all-star for both volleyball and basketball.

Kubinec says he plans to stay in athletics beyond high school.

"I think I'm going to try out for the Junior B team, the Pembina Valley Twisters this fall and see if I can crack the squad."

The Female Athlete of the Year for the 'A' Division was also awarded to a Treherne Collegiate graduate in Kindal DeGraeve. A full story with DeGraeve will be live on PortageOnline tomorrow.
