It was one of those times the forecast was bang on. Yet last night's wind seemed to catch many people off guard.

After a calm and warmer day that had many people wondering why the extreme cold warning was still issued for our area, the wind picked up late in the evening as expected and at some points, it was gusting just above 70 km/h. This made for miserable driving conditions across the Central Plains and had people wondering if they had missed some sort of blizzard warning.

Thankfully, as predicted, the windy conditions did not last for long and by the middle of the night, calm conditions returned to the region. While some light snow did fall during the short-weather event, accumulations ended up being pretty low.

It's this morning that people are finding out why the extreme cold warning stayed in effect. Even though the wind has calmed down, the temperature is near minus 30 in some spots and the wind chill is creeping into the minus 40s. In spite of the cold, it does look like things are happening on schedule and on time for the most part so far today.

Thankfully, it doesn't look like it will last too long and temperatures are expected to be much better this weekend and next week.

As far as the wind is concerned, we may be playing the "guess where the road is" game again tomorrow. Friday shows a 60% chance of light snow in the afternoon and the wind will be gusting from the south up to 60 km/h. This event may be short-lived once again as things will calm down and the sky should clear up by late evening.
