Manitoba's sunflower harvest is right around the corner.

Ben Friesen, senior market manager with Scoular, says most of the crop is close to desiccation.

He explains why they usually recommend desiccation to most producers.

"It actually does shut the plant down from taking moisture out of the ground...The sunflower with that deep root going down three to four feet, they can possibly still continue to draw some moisture so the drydown doesn't happen until you actually desiccate or have a killing frost."

Friesen says last year we didn't get a killing frost until December.

He notes sunflower harvest is probably about two or three weeks away.
