Portage la Prairie RCMP are urging drivers to slow down on Saskatchewan Avenue, especially around the construction zones.

As it stands, if travelling west, the construction starts on 2nd Street N.W. and lasts to 19th Street N.W. If heading east, the zone begins on 19th Street S.W. and ends on 3rd Street S.W. In these zones, the speed limit drops to 30 kilometres per hour.

According to Manitoba Public Insurance, a fine for going 10 kilometres per hour over the legal limit, starts at $181.50. In a construction zone, that number doubles to $363 -- whether workers are present or not. If you receive a ticket, it will have an effect on your Driver Safety Rating and the price you pay for your licence and insurance can increase.

Officers have stated they will be watching the area closely, as construction workers have noted many people are speeding through the zones.
