Portage Service for Seniors is excited to see some of the plans laid out by the provincial government.

Service for Seniors board chair, Joyce Dalmyn says their focus is on ensuring that seniors can remain independent for as long as possible. She says they focus on providing meals, transportation, and emotional support, as well as putting them in touch with services in the community.

The Seniors Plan from the government is looking into caregiver support, as well as transportation, which will hopefully aid Service for Seniors in the future.

“The thing that we are probably most known for is our meals,” explains Dalmyn “We do a series of three congregate meals in Portage per day.”

She adds, that when the  COVID-19 pandemic happened, they switched to a meal delivery system. Dalmyn says this is extremely important as some seniors can’t stand long enough to cook themselves a balanced meal.

While the plan from the government of Manitoba looks into many different issues that the elderly face, they hope that the government puts a lot of focus on financial security.

“We know there are a lot of needs that have to be addressed,” says Dalmyn, “But we certainly hope that there is some money in there to give to seniors in need of some relief during these challenging times.”
