Portage la Prairie's Safeway is closing its doors after 75 years. It was announced today that as of February 3rd Canada Safeway will be closing its Portage location permanently.  Canada Safeway Public Affairs Manager John Graham says after several years of effort it's no longer economically viable to operate the Portage store.
He says the Portage la Prairie Mall wasn't an ideal location for Canada Safeway and says the store was under performing.  He adds the 11 full time and 38 part-time staff will be given an option to transfer to a Winnipeg location.  He calls the announcement unfortunate but necessary.
