The Rotary Skate Park has been becoming more fact than fiction every day, and the Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie can't wait for it to be ready.
The Rotary Club held a meeting on October 24th, discussing various topics, one of which being the construction getting underway for the Rotary Skate Park. Phase 1 of the project is nearly finished, with the first concrete being poured just after Labour Day.
Preston Meier, director of media relations for the Rotary Club, says seeing the shovels in the ground brings an additional sense of realism to the project.
"About four years ago, the Portage Parks Committee came and talked to Rotary and asked if we would be interested in being a part of (the project)," explains Meier. "The club got together, and we supported it by taking the naming rights with a large contribution over a number of years. I can see a year from now when, it's completely done, that kids and even some adults will be on the half-pipe."
He adds that the total commitment from the Rotary Club comes out to $50,000. Meier says that this is the largest commitment currently being worked on by the club.
"We have our projects, such as Lobsterfest, our Rotary Pond Hockey Tournament, the veggie sale," notes Meier. "A portion of those proceeds will go toward our commitment to the Skate Park."
Meier says to keep an eye out for the official cheque presentation as the construction continues. No date has been set for the completion of the Rotary Skate Park as of yet, but phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
