Following the recent Association of Manitoba Municipalities convention in Brandon, there's been a lot of talk on one particular issue -- cannabis legislation. Voices of rural municipalities were no exception.

"The big one seemed to be the cannabis legislation that everyone was most interested in," says Trevor King, reeve for the RM of Woodlands. "That seemed to be the most popular topic out there, although there was a lot of other great topics of discussion out there as well. If the province is going to download those responsibilities onto us, then that's something AMM has always lobbied for -- to make sure there's money along with it."

He notes the public opinion is also vital seeing as municipalities get to decide how things will fare in their own communities. King adds several kinks have yet to be ironed out, and the municipalities require more information. He expects more buzz about the issue in his RM once the enactment date is closer.
