In honour of a milestone career in Portage la Prairie, the RM of Portage's recent council meeting presented a plaque of recognition for years of service to retiring Fire Department chief Phil Carpenter.

Deputy reeve Garth Asham made the presentation and says the council is disappointed to see him leave, reflecting on the great asset that his experience provided.

"We also know that people move on to other things, and he retiring after 44 years of service, which is a great accomplishment for Phil," says Asham. "He's been a great leader and a great direction-maker for the whole community, so we wish him well."

The plaque reads, "In appreciation for years of dedication and commitment, 1978 to 2022, the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie --  Phil Carpenter."

Phil Carpenter shares what it's like to be honoured by the RM council.

"It's very appreciated in the fact that I've been recognized for it," says Carpenter. "It's a humbling experience, so thank you very much that they did that. I appreciate it very much, thanks."
