The Portage Diversion was damaged during the first part of May, and ever since, it's been letting in some water from the Assiniboine River. Portage MLA Ian Wishart explains repair work will begin soon.

"There was some damage to the gates," says Wishart. "Hopefully, we can get that resolved."

He says the damage is slight and rendered the diversion inoperable to a small extent.

"They can't get the complete shut off that they would like," continues Wishart. "It was when we had that all that ice come down in one lot and then and they had to release it. It did a little damage."

Wishart says more time must pass in order to begin repairs. Original construction of the diversion was completed in 1970 for a total cost of $20.5 million.
