A local organization was blown away by the support for its garage sale.

Members of Reaching Home, a division of the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC), were helping someone clear out their house and decided to hold a garage sale featuring some of the items. Coordinator Tawnee Kowerchuk says they made well over their goal.

"We were hoping,  even if it got 100 or 200 dollars, we'd be happy," notes Kowerchuk. "But, it went way better than what we were expecting, it was close to 600 dollars."

She adds the garage sale isn't something that's normally done by Reaching Home, but due to the success of this one, they might look into running more. She mentions that this will certainly help the organization's goal to fight homelessness in Portage.

"(Reaching Home's) a housing first initiative for people that are struggling with homelessness," explains Kowerchuk. "We find people that need to find homes and then offer wrap-around support, whether that be food security, mental health, or medical services and just bridging the gaps in between all of those things that can kind of lead to successful housing."

She's grateful for the community's support, as people were lining up to check out the sale.
