The Portage la Prairie RCMP will be sharing tips next week to try and help prevent crimes from happening in the city.

Inspector Paul Peddle says tips will be posted on PortageOnline throughout all of next week.

"The weather's going to start getting nicer now, and usually, for the police, it means an increase in opportunity for property crime in the area," says Peddle. "So, the thing that we're focusing on, we want to get crime prevention tips and environmental design tips out to the public, that can help prevent and deter those crimes from happening."

You will likely be familiar with some of the tips, but he knows it's a good reminder for the people of Portage.

Inspector Peddle wanted to shout out the local Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) in Portage saying they do great work keeping an eye out. He says they can always use more volunteers.

"If anybody's interested in volunteering or taking part in this wonderful organization, they can certainly reach out to the city website or they can contact our local RCMP detachment in Portage to become involved, and to make a difference in the community."

The first tip will be posted on PortageOnline at 5 a.m. on Monday.
