The Portage la Prairie RCMP has issued a release asking for the public's health in reducing property crime.

The release states that as the temperature continues to rise, it will continue to become easier for property crimes to be committed. They say that number of these types of crimes is already starting to rise, so they have some tips on how to keep your belongings safe.

According to the RCMP, bikes are easy targets for theft as it allows the criminal to commit additional theft or break-ins and have an easier getaway. Police say you should always keep your bike locked, as well as have the serial number ready to provide in case it gets taken.

Police have been getting more and more reports of people who steal packages that are delivered to houses while the owners are out, also known as, "porch pirates." It's recommended that you only get items delivered when you or someone else will be home to collect them. If that's not possible, they advise getting a lockbox for the delivery person to put the package into.

If you see a suspicious vehicle following a delivery truck, report it to the police immediately. Also, make sure all valuables in your home are out of sight from windows, so as to not entice criminals.

If you have information about any possible crime, please Portage la Prairie RCMP Detachment at 204-723-2024 or Manitoba Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. You can also submit an anonymous tip here.
