Portage la Prairie ice skaters went Dancing With the Stars over the weekend as they celebrated their year-end Skating Carnival.

Programs and CanSkate Director Brittany Brown says this was their busiest season in many, many years.

"We have almost three times as many kids as we did last year in CanSkate alone," says Brown. "We chose the Dancing with the Stars theme because it was just a fun way to get a whole bunch of different ideas incorporated with different music to get the kids excited about it."

Brown says it's an event they have been planning for three months and the coaches have been helping the kids with their routines for the past few weeks. Dominique Bergeron is one of the coaches and had a lot of fun.

"I thought it was great. Our CanSkaters have improved so much throughout the season," says Brown. "Letting them go out there by themselves and show their parents what they can do, and I just thought it went great."

CanSkate is a program for beginners of any age to learn the fundamentals of skating. STARSkate focuses on figure skating, specifically.
