They may not have got the ideal finish they were looking for, but nonetheless it was mission accomplished this weekend for the Portage Phillies.

The Phillies were in Winnipeg taking part in the Provincial Men's Fastball tournament, and after opening the round robin with a record of 1-3, battled back to win their next 3 games, earning a berth in the finals. Portage couldn't keep their offensive momentum going however, and were shutout by the Winkler Rebels, 5-0. Even though they didn't win the competition, Portage is still guaranteed a spot at the Western Canadian Championships due to the fact that the top 2 clubs from Provincials lock down a spot at next month's event.

Phillies Pitcher, Gregg Waldvogel, says a lack of hitting plagued Portage in the round robin, but rebounded nicely to give them a chance to win the tournament. As for the final, he adds the Phillies simply ran out of gas after such an impressive run to get them to that point.

Portage will return to action in the Winnipeg Men's Fastball League this Thursday when they host the Manitoba Masters.
