As you walk the streets of Portage la Prairie this month, you may have noticed men around the community sporting moustaches and facial hair like it's the 1970s.
Movember or NoShavember is well underway worldwide as men support each other to raise awareness and funds for men's mental health, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and suicide.
John Penner, the team captain for the Portage Mutual Mo Bros, started the trend at his office 12 years ago and says his inspiration for the month goes back to losing his brother to cancer.
"It's been a tribute to him personally because his birthday was in November," says Penner. "I was able to get additional staff organized at work to participate through that."
The 17-year Portage Mutual Insurance employee says that staff look forward to the month each year as they get to show off their upper lip.
"Men don't like to talk about themselves very much, so it's always good to try and start that awkward conversation about how you're feeling, how you're doing, and just get that word around with everybody that you know."
The Portage Mutual Mo Bros goal for this year is $8500, and they're already halfway there.
"It's a worthy cause, and it's great to see the support from the community and from the people that we know," notes Penner.
