With Valentine's Day two weeks away, a challenge has been offered to try and show more love to the seniors in our community.

The Portage la Prairie Regional Library will run its Valentines for Seniors program once again. The program ensures that seniors, who may not have any other family, can still enjoy Valentine's Day by giving them a card. This year's goal is to deliver more cards than in 2022 when 435 cards were delivered around the city.

Program Coordinator Allissa Cannon says last year's edition was a big success, but they're still hoping to surpass that this year.

"It's just a lot of different craft supplies, stickers, and cardstock so that they can make the cards," explains Cannon. "We've included ideas for inspiration for kids to make theirs. It's a package to take home to really be creative on your own and come up with your own ideas."

She adds there aren't any requirements about what to put on the card. Cannon notes, however, that if you'd like to make a card for someone specific, they'll make sure that your card gets to the right person.

"Last year, we did Douglas Campbell Lodge, Lions Prairie Manor, and Dalton Grove," says Cannon. "I'd love to expand that to other places around town where I know there would be seniors congregated. Places like the Herman Prior Activity Centre, and some other homes, too."

The program coordinator asks anyone with suggestions for where they should deliver to reach out. She'd also like to see classrooms take on the project to help spread the love.

Valentines for Seniors kits will be available to pick up until February 4th. They ask that the cards be returned by the 10th.
