Portage Golf Club hosts first 100th anniversary tournament

The Portage Golf Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

On Saturday, the course held its first 100-year anniversary tournament, which saw groups of six golfers take on the challenge of a Vegas Scramble. Manager of the course Deb Pritchard outlines what the event entailed.

"Essentially, what happens is, all six players will tee off, and they roll the dice to see who's drive they're going to use for that hole," Pritchard explains. "It all comes down to the luck of the roll, if the drive that you roll ends up in the water, it can change the outcome for that hole. It was great for some laughs."

Pritchard says they had over 120 golfers take part in the eccentric tournament, with the team of Lindsey Jordan, Owen Gillespie, Jo-Anne Clark-Gillespie, and Erin, Trevor, and Cliff McCartney taking home the championship trophy. They shot a 62 as a group, with the second and third place teams finishing with a 63 and 64 respectively.

The manager says this is the first of a few events to be celebrating the 100-year milestone for the club. She talks about how amazing it is to have the course running as well as ever after a century of use.

"It's obviously an amazing accomplishment. There are quite a few courses across Canada actually that are hitting the centennial year this year, but we're certainly proud to be one of the few Manitoban courses hitting that mark," Pritchard continues. "Our membership certainly deserves all the credit. They've put a lot of hard work over the years to build this course to be what it is, and they continue to support it day in and day out."

With the first major tournament in the books, Pritchard is beyond relieved to be able to have a normal season this year. 

"It's great to be back to what we'd like to call normal now," says Pritchard. "So, we'll have a full docket of tournament events throughout the season, a lot of our regular events from 2019 and previous years are back on the calendar. They're filling up fairly fast as people are anxious to get in and get back to that feeling of tournament play that we used to have."
