Over the weekend, the 18th installment of the Portage Potato Festival saw youth from the community get the chance to participate and run through a Junior FireFighter Obstacle Course.

Seth Scarrett, a full-time member of the Portage Fire Department, says that the course saw roughly 150 kids come through.

"They would go through a series of obstacles and rescue a patient. We had two lanes where we had the kids race, and then whoever brought the patient back first got a prize."

Scarrett shares that it was great to run the kids through the course and then have them sit inside a fire truck and play with the lights and sirens.

"It's always a good experience to get out there with the community, especially the youth. It's nice to see the kids showing interest in the fire department and our equipment."

The Portage FireFighter notes his experience at the festival was great. Although he did work all day, he had a chance to take in all the festival had to offer later that night.

"It was a perfect day. Not too warm, not too cold. Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and it looks like the community had fun."

The Portage Potato Festival took place at Rotary Republic of Manitobah Park this past Friday and Saturday, August 5th & 6th.
