If you are looking to do some good this holiday season, why not donate to the Reaching Home Food Drive?

Reaching Home is a program designed to help those in Portage la Prairie who are homeless or are on the verge of becoming homeless.

Case Manager Kimberley Sharp says this food drive officially ends Tuesday afternoon, but they will continue taking donations all winter long.

"We're trying to gain some donations that we can hand out to our clients that are struggling with some food insecurity and to people who don't have houses necessarily or a place to heat a lot of food up," says Sharp. "So, we're really looking for things that are convenient and easy to eat and are easy to open -- that you can have on the go."

She says this includes granola/protein bars, breakfast bars, Chef Boyardee, Mr. Noodles, canned poultry, fruit juice, soup and Kraft Dinner, to name a few examples. These items, and other non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the PCRC office at 56 Royal Road North.

Sharp says it's a struggle for many people in the community and the number continues to go up, as does the cost of food.

"There's quite a few," says Sharp. "I've got, probably, at least 15 to 20 folks that we're helping out, and then we have people that are swinging by every day, that are just new folks swinging by."

For everyone who makes a drop off of food to the PCRC, they will get entered in a draw to win a $750 Travel Credit with VIA Rail. The draw will happen Tuesday afternoon.
