Students and staff from Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) participated in a Remembrance Day Ceremony Thursday morning.

Larry Smith, Social Science Department Head, has been organizing the Remembrance Day event for the school for the last 16 years.

The ceremony started at 10 a.m. with the PCI band playing multiple songs in tribute to Canada's fallen soldiers.

Smith says he thinks this annual tradition is extremely important.

"I think that students have to know what sacrifices were made for the things that we enjoy today," states the educator.

Smith adds that when he looks around services like this, he notices students keenly listening and trying to take as much as possible from the ceremony.

"They are being respectful, and I think they want to learn about some of the sacrifices made for their freedoms."

Smith notes that he was delighted that this installment of the ceremony could be held in person instead of virtually.
