This morning saw the official launch of Operation Red Nose in Portage la Prairie.

This city's the seventh centre to offer safe rides home on weekends in December for those who've been too festive.

Portage Minor Hockey is running the program, and receives all donations from riders. Ferdi Nelissen calls it a way to give back to the community, and urges members to volunteer to make the program happen.

With ten nights to deal with, they'll need a lot of volunteers. Nelissen adds it's a worthwhile program that keeps people safe, while fundraising for Portage Minor Hockey.

RCMP Inspector Ken Turner is glad to see Operation Red Nose here -- statistics to this month show there have been 59 more alcohol-related offences to date this year than last -- 249, compared to 190.

The Manitoba Safety Council's Mike Waite thinks that shows the importance of promoting road safety. He calls it a great opportunity to get the message out.

Mayor Ken Brennan believes Operation Red Nose is good for the city, and promises to support it. He congratulates Portage Minor Hockey for stepping up and running the program.
