A new Swine Production Foundations program is being launched at Assiniboine Community College.

The online and self-directed program provides learners with a broad coverage of the industry from stockmanship, to pig health care, breeding, farrowing, nursery, and grow and finish.

The course will also provide an understanding of swine operations, including regulations, health and safety, record keeping, and barn systems and maintenance.

Tim Hore, Dean of the Russ Edwards School of Agriculture & Environment says the program will train the next generation of hog farmers and swine technicians to uphold the strong animal care standards the hog sector is responsible for.

The first group of students for the program will begin in December.

Two additional programs are also being planned to advance the knowledge and leadership skills for swine technicians.

The courses also being offered at Assiniboine Community College are expected to launch in 2023.
