Monday saw the launch of Manitoba's new electronic registration system for Property Registry.

"The Portage Land Titles Office is actually one of six district office locations throughout he province of Manitoba," says Maureen Terra, CSI executive sponsor. "E-Registration allows our clients to submit documents electronically over the internet instead of having to courier or mail paper documents in."

Terra says this will especially benefit rural communities seeing as the time and costs required to courier-in paper documents will not be required. You can submit your documents to the land claims office directly from your computer over the internet.

You apply to their office to get a secure userid and password to log-in and complete your registration. She notes ereginfo.ca is available to obtain training material including lessons by way of videos with a link to the client service teams for extra support. All of this, she adds, is to ensure your online registration's as easy as possible.

Terra says people don't usually associate online law issues with user-friendliness, but notes they're really made efforts to ensure the user interface is intuitive. They made the online system after a model of a Titles Online system they released a couple of years ago. Terra says most of their clients are already searching using that system, so the new system is something they'll be very familiar with.

Terra adds it's a made-in-Manitoba project. She explains they're part of Terranet who operates land registry system in Ontario, which has been extremely helpful due to their experience and expertise. Terra says it actually began in 2015 and designed with Manitoba in mind. At that time there was a great partnership with the Registrar General for Manitoba who was involved in some of the working groups designing the system.

She says E-Registration works on a smart form basis, building in a large part of policies, rules and land titles into the document itself. This helps reduce many errors made by clients and office staff. Terra adds they're working closely with the Law Society of Manitoba Barr Association's Real Property section to ensure everything works properly.
