It took her two years of work but for the Minnedosa MLA, it was well worth it.

Leanne Rowat says the NDP have finally stopped stonewalling grandparents who've been fighting for the right to access their grandchildren.  After rejecting her bill both times it was introduced, the government has now promised to table similar legislation which would give grandparents access.

But Rowat's cautiously optimistic.  She says they've introduced other legislation in the past which has done nothing for the interest groups they committed to.

Rowat stresses grandparents' rights need to be recognized, especially since family dynamics have changed -- there are now more divorces and geographical challenges.

Portage was included in Rowat's tour of the province this summer, where her list of support topped over three thousand signatures.  She believes it served as an eye opener for the government.
