The MacGregor Mustangs varsity boys volleyball team are Zone 7 champions.

The Mustangs defeated the Carberry Cougars handily in the league Finals, winning in two straight sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-15. Head coach Bryan Marriott says they split the season series with Carberry and came away with the win that meant the most on the road. He adds they've been a very dedicated group and says they deserve this championship banner.

"I can't express how proud of these guys I am. We worked hard all year as an entire team. Everybody has been chipping in and working hard at practice. They're just such an awesome group of young men," Marriott explains. "They've been on a streak, and everything came together. We've been a really solid team over the last month. It was a lot of fun to get that championship."

Since their loss to the Cougars, MacGregor went 5-1, only losing to the William Morton Warriors. Marriott says the team was ecstatic about the championship victory.

"We came together as a group once the final point was scored. There were a lot of smiles, laughter, and high-fives. The four boys that are in Grade 12 certainly led our group this year. The team will miss them next year," Marriott continues. "What a great way to wrap up the zone play. We are looking forward to potentially getting into the AA boys provincials, which is in The Pas. If we keep playing the way we have, I feel that we have a good shot."

Marriott notes they have a solid chance to continue this success next year as they have eight returning players, and he adds the junior varsity program has shown a lot of bright spots this season as well. The head coach says it was the perfect end to a season.

"MacGregor has been known to have a lot of strong teams and a lot of strong volleyball programs going on. It was a really good evening and a really good way to end off our zone play."
