The Portage la Prairie Lions Club is looking to expand its membership while collecting donatable items for a local group.

Lion Robert Martin, president of Portage Voyageur Lions Branch Club, shares that this coming Saturday, at the Co-op, the club will be hosting a food, hygiene and membership drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Martin talks about the need to get more members involved.

"We are trying to bring in some new members to our club. We need members so we can go out into the community and supply support to our community through fundraising and providing services."

As far as the donatable items part of the drive goes, people are encouraged to bring food and hygiene items that will all be donated to the Portage Bear Clan.

Martin explains that they accept anything, but really need stuff like toiletries, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and any food item that's easy to open.

He touches on the drive in a general sense.

"It's a big thing that we do every year with the Portage Bear Clan. It helps our community by providing food and hygiene products to people who cannot afford them, especially during these times of COVID. We have provided quite a few families with food and hygiene products, so it's a big thing for us."

Martin notes that coming out to this event will support his club and the Bear Clan, but less fortunate members of the community as well.
