The RM of Cartier's awarded a tender to provide repairs and upgrades to the Elie lagoon.

Reeve Dale Fossay says it went to local contractor Eagle Eye Construction, for about $700,000. He adds it'll be cost-shared with the federal and provincial governments, at 50% and 25%, respectively. Fossay outlines the work that needs done.

"Several years ago, our consulting engineers identified the Elie lagoon in need of repair," he says, "Wind erosion on one of the sides was severe, so to correct that, dirt is put back in place, and the term rip-rap is to place large stones over it, so it's covered to protect it from erosion in the future."

Fossay acknowledges there's some relief among Council at getting this work done.

"Getting the funding from the two levels of government is critical," he says, "So we've had very good success cleaning up our infrastructure projects that we've had over the years, with the expansion of low-pressure sewer/water lines, so our wish list is certainly getting shorter all the time."

The work's going to begin very soon, so it'll be complete before winter sets in. Fossay adds there's also relief when the tender price was lower than the original estimate of 1.5 million dollars.
