The president of the Portage and District Labour Council calls it long overdue.

The government has tabled a bill to update Manitoba's Labour Standards Law - Daren Van den Bussche says it's been 30 years since it's been looked at.

Among the several changes he applauds is giving employees a minimum of three hours pay if they report to work and are sent home.  Van den Bussche says this will recognize the transportation costs of reporting to work.

Other changes include allowing employees to take an unpaid break for atleast half-an-hour during a five hour shift, and giving employees the right to three unpaid days off for bereavement.

Because the workplace has evolved over the past 30 years, Van den Bussche feels the changes need to be put in place.
