There's now a children's book available written by Hutterites, focusing on their community.

It translates to "Linda's Happy Day", and is the brainchild of Linda and Sonia Maendel of Elm River Colony.

Sonia provided the illustrations, while Linda was the writer. She's an education assistant, and considered writing the book for some time. The opportunity to have it printed was a matter of good timing -- she'd just completed her manuscript when the Hutterian Bretheren Book Centre asked to publish it.

At the suggestion of a German language consultant, Maendel wrote the text in high German, but used the colonies' own dialect for the dialogue. She feels it's important Hutterite kids have stories they identify with, which is something that's only beginning now.
