Portage businesses aren't following an Ipod ban being enforced...

A recent Ipsos Reid survey shows 30 per cent of mid-to-large sized businesses in Canada have banned Ipods and mp3 players from the workplace.

It suggests the ban is another effort to ditch the potential of mass data theft.

While such a ban isn't being sported by several here in Portage, Shaun Twist -- the director of info technology for the Central RHA -- isn't surprised why some companies would use it, considering the number of hack attacks computers these days are subject to.

Twist notes the RHA enforces declarations of confidentiality similar to those used by Dave Omichinski at the Portage Credit Union.   Omichinski doesn't blame other companies for using the ban, considering the size of an Ipod's memory.

Jerry Spakowski of Meyers-Norris-Penny adds assurance, saying updated computers have several safeguards to prevent data theft.

Many other businesses in Portage confirm they have these safeguards in place.
