The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is investigating the death of a man following his arrest by the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) in Long Plain First Nation.

On July 9, MFNPS reported an incident to IIU that occurred earlier that day. According to the notification, at about t2:17 p.m. on July 9, a man was arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and lodged at the Long Plain MFNPS detachment. At approximately 3:21 p.m., he was found unresponsive in his cell. He was transported to the Portage la Prairie District Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. 

The IIU has assumed responsibility for this investigation in accordance with regulations. As this matter involves a fatality, a request for a civilian monitor will be made to the Manitoba Police Commission.
