The Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes have finally tasted victory this season in the NHL.

They defeated Atlanta 4-3, with Ray Whitney getting the winner with a second left on the clock.
Buffalo Sabres shaded Detroit 3-2 in a shootout. The Sabres sport a 4-and-0 record. Vancouver lost its home opener, 6-4 to San Jose. Florida handed Tampa Bay their third straight loss, 3-2.

In the CFL, Saskatchewan Roughriders nipped Montreal Alouettes 27-26 on a 32 yard field goal by Luca Congi. It came on the final play of the game. The Roughies inched closer to a playoff spot. They have to win their last two games or have Edmonton lose once to make the post-season.

The baseball playoffs saw Detroit blank Oakland 3-0, for a 3-0 lead in the best of seven American league Championship Series. The Tigers can gain a World Series berth with a win this afternoon.
In the National League Championship Series, St. Louis dumped New York Mets 9-6. That ties the series at 1 apiece. Game three is tonight.

In golf, Arnold Palmer's decided he won't play another competitive round. He stopped keeping score after the fourth hole at the Champions Tour event in Houston yesterday. Palmer won 62 PGA tournaments, including 7 majors.
