A Portage la Prairie broadcasting prodigy was part of the Winnipeg Jets NextGen Takeover last weekend.

Seven-year-old Heidi Sobkowich made an appearance on the TSN postgame show interviewing defenceman Nate Schmidt, following the team's 4-0 loss to the New York Islanders.

Heidi's dad Shane heard about the contest from one of his bandmates, and Heidi was inspired to create an audition video. She emulated one of her favourite people to watch on TV.

"I tried to be like Sara Orlesky," says Heidi. "She's very confident when she does it."

Heidi and the other winners travelled to Winnipeg on the Saturday to get a behind-the-scenes look at how the broadcast works. This would allow them to get comfortable for showtime on Sunday.

Heidi admits she was excited, but also nervous. That being said, she had a blast and cannot wait to do it again!

"I'd like to see me do it again in the future. If I had to choose a team to do it with, it would probably be the Winnipeg Jets."

Her favourite Jets are Connor Hellebuyck, Kyle Connor, and Mark Scheifele. Her favourite sports are hockey and ringette. Heidi is in Grade 2 at École Crescentview School and says she has had a lot of fun this year, making new friends.

"It was pretty cool to be on the morning show with my dad as well" commented Sobkowich.
