The first of several public meetings on grandparents' rights was held today in Selkirk, organized by Minnedosa MLA Leanne Rowat.

Roughly 40 people attended a public meeting on grandparents' rights today in Selkirk.

Minnedosa MLA Leanne Rowat is spearheading the effort, after twice failing to have a private members' bill pass in the legislature. She wants to improve grandparents' access to grandchildren in the event of a family breakdown.

It was no coincidence Rowat chose Selkirk for the initial meeting. She's received strong support from the region, through petitions and letters. More meetings are planned across the province in the next couple of months.

Rowat decided to take the issue to the people because of the lack of support in the legislature. She'll re-introduce the bill during the next legislative session.
