In the NHL five of the six Canadian teams were in action.

The Canadiens welcomed back former goaltender Jose Theodore with an 8-5 win over Colorado, Ottawa torched New Jersey 8-1. Toronto lost to the NY Rangers as Brendan Shanahan scored the only shoot-out goal for a 5-4 victory. In the Western Conference the Vancouver Canucks won in overtime for the second straight night -- 4-3 over Nashville and the Edmonton Oilers scored two late third period goals to beat Detroit 3-1.

In the CFL the Blue Bombers have a chance at a home playoff game after beating the Stampeders 28-13. Elsewhere Hamilton lost 23-17 to B.C. and Edmonton beat Montreal 30-20.

The Manitoba Bisons remain undefeated in CIS football after yesterday's 49-44 win over the Regina Rams.

The St. Louis Cardinals drew first blood in the world series beating the Tigers 7-2. Game two goes tonight in Detroit.
