The people of Portage la Prairie got a chance on Wednesday night to know the candidates participating in the Municipal Election coming up later this month.

The event called-- "Donut" who to vote for?-- saw 17 out of the 18 registered candidates for mayor or council attend.

The forum was held at the Herman Prior Activity Centre and facilitated by the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC). It took place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., encouraging the public to question the individuals that might represent them while also enjoying free donuts.

Mari Lawrence, executive director of the PCRC, says it was everything they could have asked for.

"We had a great turnout of candidates," says  Lawrence. "The public came to ask questions and get to know the candidates, which we always think is a great thing to have informed voters for our community. So, that was really positive, and the donuts certainly helped."

Three of the four candidates for mayor were present at the event: Sharilyn Knox, Mohammad Tahir Khan and Don Pelechaty. Bryon Hamilton was the only mayoral candidate not in attendance due to travel for work, but he had representatives there in his place.

The next chance for the public to get to know these candidates a little bit better will be on October 19th, when the Portage & District Chamber of Commerce is hosting a question-and-answer All-Candidates Forum at Yellowquill School.

Portagers will hit the polls for the Municipal Election on October 26th.
