The Manitoba RCMP has released crime stats for April 2022, which compares its crime numbers from April of 2021.

The Manitoba West District, which includes Portage la Prairie has seen an overall decrease in crime of 24 per cent, 5,223 to 3,952.

Calls regarding common police activities went down from 587 to 499. The biggest drops came from Suspicious Person/Vehicle/Property, which fell from 255 to 177, as well as Breach of Peace calls, which went from 141 to 105. The highest increase came from calls for wellbeing checks, which jumped from 73 to 109.

Crimes against the person saw a very slight increase, going from 304 to 307. Assault calls had the biggest increase, rising from 170 to 190.

Crimes against property saw an increase compared to April of 2021, from 490 to 577. Theft under $5,000 nearly doubled, climbing from 90 to 164. Break and enters also increased from 69 to 90, Fraud increased from 44 to 56, but possession of stolen goods did decrease, going from 21 to 16.

Drug enforcement calls went down from 57 to 45, with trafficking calls making up the entirety of the calls.
