A business on Tupper Street North is facing a statement of claim by the City of Portage.

It says Westend Auto Sales violates the Maintenance and Occupancy By-law, and would require the owners to stop using the property as a wrecking and junk yard. The City had ordered the property cleaned up last autumn, but says nothing was done.

Councillor Jeff Bereza wouldn't speculate on what comes next because it's in the hands of lawyers. However, he stresses the City recommended the property be cleaned up.

Bereza thinks this is an indication of Council's direction toward beautification of entrances to the city. He adds it's important they stick to their original plan in the matter.

Westend owner Heinrich Harder declined comment.
