The newly appointed City Council has welcomed one of the city’s most active organizations to City Hall.

The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie held an evening meeting on Tuesday, November 29th, where they met with the new council, as well as took a tour around City Hall. Councillor Terrie Porter is currently in her first term with the council, but she already knows how vital the Rotary Club is to Portage.

“I want to mention the fact that I was a Rotary mom,” explains Porter. “My daughter was a Rotary exchange student, so we go back a long way. Rotary has a wonderful mission and mandate.”

Rotary Club President Jennifer Campbell Dornan says getting to meet the new and returning councillors was special, as it shows the trust that the council has in the club.

“(We’ve) always had a very good relationship, and it's something that we want to make sure that we foster and keep the momentum on going forward,” says Campbell Dornan. “We have the same interests at heart and that's the citizens of Portage la Prairie, so being able to have that camaraderie and that feeling of partnership is fantastic.”

While many of the people attending the meeting were either a Rotarian or a Councillor, there was one person who represented both, that being councillor Preston Meier. Campbell Dornan says that his contributions to the club have been invaluable.

“He does such a good job of balancing both of those hats,” says Campbell Dornan. “Obviously, there are things that he can't share with the Rotary Club. I respect him so much for being so respectful of both organizations and having both organizations' best interests at heart. I feel like Councillor Meier does a really good job of balancing that.”

The Rotary Club hopes that you attend their Rotary Santa Parade of Lights on Friday, December 2nd at 7:30 p.m.
