Horse racing at the Assiniboia Downs is back and a few local horses impressed on opening day.

Frank Johnson of Westbourne and his wife Betty Hughes are experienced owners/breeders and have a plethora of horses who will be racing throughout this season, two of which were in action Tuesday.

Rookie horse Dot Dash Dot took part in his first official race ever and placed third. Dot Dash Dot was in second place for a good portion of the race but was overtaken just a few metres away from the finish line. Even with the third-place finish, the horse earned Hughes and Johnson $1,264 from the opening contest on Tuesday.

Later in the day, veteran horse Call the Cops suited up for his twelfth race in his career and finished top three for the tenth time. The horse ended the race in third place for the third time in his three-year career. Since 2020, Call the Cops has two first-place finishes, five seconds, and three thirds, earning $52,116.

In Tuesday's race, the horse brought home $1,399 for Hughes and Johnson.

The local breeders have another horse set to take the stage at the downs on Monday as Prairie Magic will be in action for the first time this year. The horse will take part in the first race of the day and has the second-best odds to take home the majority of the $15,000 purse at 3/1 to finish first.

Prairie Magic had a first, second, and third-place finish in the four races it participated in 2020.
