This year's Potato Festival isn't likely to include a beer garden in front of the Portage Hotel.

City Council gave the request a cool reception last night, saying the event is geared toward families.

Portage Hotel owner Dave Andrews agrees, but notes other family events allow alcohol. He points to the recent air show as an example.

Councillor Orville Wagner admits other events may set a precedent. However, he adds the beer garden at the air show was well away from the main event.

Andrews is disappointed, but hopes Council will re-consider when they vote July 10th.

Wagner thinks that's unlikely.
