Portage is hosting a weekend strategic planning retreat for the Manitoba Arts Council.

They're putting a five year plan together, and that process is one of the reasons for being in this city.

Executive Director Douglas Riske notes arts councils everywhere are moving outside major centres. He adds they're using a model from Ohio, where that organization went to outlying communities, making connections and opening dialogue with local arts groups. Riske doesn't think that's been achieved here yet, but the process is beginning through retreats like this.

He says the Manitoba Arts Council's focus is on public value and public engagement, which is also behind this weekend's trip to Portage. Riske characterizes this region as connected to the arts, through programs like Artssmarts.

He notes the goal is to invest taxpayers' money well, while ensuring the arts remain an important part of the community.
