Arthur Raymond Domes

March 22, 1923 – February 10, 2023

Art Domes was born in 1923 in Verwood, Saskatchewan, to Olga and Archie Domes. One of five children, he grew up on the family farm loving horses, cattle, and the farm life.

After high school, Art attended the School of Agriculture in Saskatoon for a Diploma in Agriculture while farming with his dad in the summers. One fall when his father was away Art herded his cattle to the railway in Verwood and rode with them on the train to Winnipeg. After selling them Art headed off “to see the world”, a highlight of his trip being a stay in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York.

Art met the love of his life, Mary McCann, in 1951 at Kenosee Lake, Saskatchewan, where they were teaching summer short courses. Art's new black torpedo back Pontiac first attracted her attention, and they were married July 5, 1952. Daniel was born in 1954, David in 1958, Patricia in 1961, and Carey in 1964.

In 1952 Art went back to the University of Saskatchewan, completing his Degree in Agriculture while balancing farming in the summer with a wife, new baby, school, and responsibilities as College President.  Art graduated with a BSC in Agriculture in 1955. In 1957, he rented the farm to his brother Herb and took a job with the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. Art and Mary were active community members and left behind many good friends when the family moved to Portage la Prairie in 1967. In Portage, Art continued his career with the Manitoba Department of Agriculture. As a Farm Management Specialist, he became one of the earliest advocates of computer budgeting.

Art and Mary purchased a home on Crescent Lake which became the center for many family gatherings. After retiring they enjoyed many wonderful winters at Venture Out in Mesa, Arizona, appreciating the opportunity to reconnect with many of their dear Kindersley friends. In their 92nd year Art and Mary sold the house by the lake and moved into a seniors’ apartment at Regency House.  Art and Mary had many good years there with lots of friends and activities. Mary passed away in 2020 after 68 years of happy marriage. Art continued to live independently in Regency until February 2022, when he moved into Lions Prairie Manor where he spent his remaining months.

Art and Mary enjoyed a rich family life, creating many wonderful memories with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their Wilkinson Crescent home.  In retirement Art enjoyed ham radio, once connecting with an astronaut on the International Space Station. He was the family historian, publishing two detailed volumes chronicling Domes and McCann family history. In 1973 Art bought a cattle ranch as a hobby and farmed and ranched with his son David until 1988. Their herd of Red Angus cattle was his pride and joy.

Art is survived by his sons; Dan (Alice), David (Laurie), daughter Patricia Perchak (Randy), grandchildren; Cody Perchak (Lindsey), Krystyna Domes, David Domes (Sarah), Megan Halmrast (Moe LaRoche), Rebecca Mathieu (Shawn Mathieu), Karl Domes (Samuel Cawkell), Alexandra Halmrast, Daniel Domes and Tyler Halmrast (Kristy Dugray), great-grandchildren; Sasha McLeod Mathieu, Andy Halmrast,  Darius LaRoche, Raeanne LaRoche, Peyton Perchak, Hyde Mathieu, and Grace Domes.

Art is predeceased by wife Mary, daughter Carey Halmrast, son-in-law Randy Perchak, and siblings Elsie Huber, Edward Domes, Irene Collings, and Herbert Domes.

The family extends sincere thanks to the compassionate staff at Lions Prairie Manor where Art spent the last year.

Graveside service arrangements are pending for later in 2023.
