Last night the walk for Alzheimer's took place in Portage la Prairie. Regional coordinator for north central region of Alzheimer's Society Karen Lambert outlines the activity.

Karen Lambert"It's our annual walk . This year it's called Walk for Alzheimer's, here at Island Park. There are walks all over Manitoba in June. The big walk in Winnipeg is next Tuesday the 14th. But here in Portage we're doing our walk today, and walk around the island. We've got quite a few people starting to roll in now."

She says several teams arrived.

"A team from Douglas Campbell (Lodge), we've got representatives from Lion's Prairie Manor, and a team from Herman Pryor Centre, as well as a lot of family and friends that have come out to support. I think we must be close to 25, 30 right now, and I think there'll be some more coming yet."

Lambert says the weather was just right for the walk.

One of the teams all ready to walk"The route is the walk around on the pavement. The trail around Island Park. There's a few signs up with some questions, and a little further on some answers, and some activities to participate in as they go. And there are hotdogs on the grill. We've got Rob Painter from Investor's (Group Financial Services) who's cooking up some hotdogs for participants and drinks that he supplied as well. It's for awareness, and of course it's one of the major fundraisers for the Alzheimer's Society."

More participantsParticipants had pledge sheets filled out ahead of time, and they also were able to collect pledges ahead and bring the money in with their sheets. Lambert says some come in and just give a donation. She adds everyone's always welcome, and those who feel to give a donation can do so. A lot of the evening is for awareness about their services and programs they make available to the community.

Lambert says she gives her thanks to those who attended to support, and they hope to make it bigger and better in each coming year. She says they're really thankful for the great sunshine.
