For the price of a dollar the Portage Friendship Centre has sold one of their vans to Youth for Christ.

Portage Friendship Centre executive director Shirley Bernard explains they often receive donations for their organization from the community and it feels good be able to be the ones making the donation. She adds they've been partners with Youth for Christ for a while and realized their need.

"We've had this second van parked for a couple of years. It's just been our spare van, we use it when needed, but the van needs a little bit of work to it and we don't have a budget to fix it, so we're hoping Youth for Christ can get a budget and fix it. Because of the partnership and we see that they need it that's why we chose to ask them if they'd like to have it."

She notes the staff at the centre are excited to be able to help out but are also somewhat sad to see the van go after all the years.

Youth for Christ executive director Art Schroeder explains they are privileged to have received the van.

"It's been really exciting to be able to be partnered with [the Friendship Centre] and to see that they believe in the programs that we're running as well and to be able to offer us this van. It's a huge privilege and just an honour."

Schroeder notes transportation is an issue they often face but says the new van will help to overcome the barrier.

"It'll help us reach out to the youth in the community in a way that we haven't before. We've got a smaller van but this will help us to get more kids in a vehicle at one time to different program sites and so that's going to help us lots that way."

He adds they're thankful to the Friendship Centre for the gift.
