The 2016 Graduating Class of Westpark School received their diplomas last night in Portage la Prairie.

Westpark Principal Brian Ferguson says all the students were quite gifted.

"Every year we say this is a group we're really going to miss. But this year, without a doubt, this is a group we're really going to miss. It's such an awesome group of young people, young adults, and the commitment to the school, the community, and each other within the class has just been amazing."

Valedictorian Anicka jokes about being picked for the role.

"I was really honoured to be selected as valedictorian. Just knowing that my class didn't just put up with me, that they actually liked me, and wanted me to speak for them. I really care about all of them, so being up there was really good," she laughs. "It felt like we were a family, and we were just all in it together even though some got more awards than others. I just wanted my speech to represent Jesus Christ and his heart for people very well. So I hope his presence was felt during the ceremony and I'm really proud."

Leading the way in scholarships was Heidi Steppan with 5. She explains her plans for life after graduation.

"My summer I'll be working at Valley View Bible Camp in the horse barn, I'm helping run the horsemanship program there. Then I want to be a paramedic. So I'm working at getting into the Paramedicine program here in town, so then I can stay at home."
