Water retention's always been a big issue for the Municipality of North Norfolk, and it doesn't seem to be changing any time soon.

Mayor Neil Christoffersen says recently they've been asked if they could be doing any more.

"So this item on the agenda was a discussion about how we could increase any activity we've been doing toward water retention, and the focus being on climate change. Climate change, you don't know if it's going to be a drought or if there'll be flooding, either way water retention is a good deal. The more we can do to hold water back to assist everybody in our municipality, as well as our neighbours toward the lakes."

He says a large issue is the escarpment from one side of the town to the other.

"So when the water, especially during a large rain or in the spring when it melts, the water tends to take off pretty quick. It's not uncommon to have a drop of 10 feet in a mile, so it gets up quite a speed and the erosion has quite the effect on the land. So we like to hold it back as much as we can."

He adds it's nice to get out front of any future projects to help with the budget.

"So we were discussing some of the projects that could come up, and different ways we could approach the projects to increase our number of water retention projects in the area. Of course it's all got to do with money too, it's all budgeting, so it's nice to identify them and get these projects in the pipeline so that we can keep working on them and keep focused on water retention."
