The RM of Coldwell's currently experiencing problems with its Wagon Creek Drain. Reeve Brian Sigfusson outlines the dilemma.

"It affects about four or five farmers, including the Number 6 Highway. The water bottles up there. There's too much water coming from the south and east there. The outlet isn't big enough. I don't know why they didn't make that bigger to start with when they made that drain."

He says it's causing flooding for those on both sides of the highway, as well as on land to the west of the old railway track.

"It's typical. They started the drain at the wrong end. There was an old existing drain there, but they didn't improve it. It needed improving to make it work properly. It's probably a couple of weeks' worth of work, with about four or five machines. They have to straighten the ditch out in places, fill in some of the old one and make it straighter, and replace two sets of pipes."

He says they're waiting on word from the Province.

"I did take it to our MLA, but I'm waiting for him to get back to me. He's a decent young fellow -- Derek Johnson. I know in their tight budget restraint project we'll like be declined, but if you don't ask you don't get. It's so dry right now that we'd like to do it immediately. There's no cost figure, but I have an engineer who's supposed to give me some idea."

Sigfusson adds it's something that's long overdue.
