It's almost kettle season for Portage la Prairie's Salvation Army, and volunteers are needed to help collect donations.

Campaign Coordinator Rose Carriere says things will get going around the last week of November.

"Our kettles go into the stores, 5 different stores in Portage, on November 24th until December 23rd. The shifts are from 10 a.m. until 8 at night, so there's a lot of shifts. 312 total shifts we have to fill, and we need about 260 more people to step up."

Carriere explains the details of volunteer shifts.

"Individual shifts are 2 hours, but there are a lot of businesses and church groups that will do a full day for us, which is wonderful. So we want to put a challenge out to those folks to see how many people they can get, and how many days they can take. It's a very important cause because Salvation Army does a lot of work in Portage la Prairie."

She adds it's an important fundraiser for Salvation Army.

"They raised approximately $25,000 through donations, the jingle bell breakfast, all different kinds of things including the kettles. So that was in 2015 and we want to see if we can get a little bit more than that this year because we were down a little bit last year. It goes toward our Christmas Hampers which are very important."
